I would spend endless nights awake fearing death (I know, it was pretty bad), suffered from constant digestive discomfort, which lead me to start avoiding food and losing 10 Kg in a matter of 2 months. This was literally the tip of the iceberg, I had endless systemic symptoms that no doctor could figure out what was wrong with me. I still remember one doctor telling my mum, “you know, this is what teenagers do to get the attention they want”. Despite the doctor telling my mum that I was faking it all, she never gave up on me until I was finally diagnosed with panic attack syndrome, depression and anxiety by another doctor and was put on medication.
Even at that age, I never really liked the idea of being on medication, however, I knew that it was necessary and it would hopefully be only for a short period of time. The medication caused me to have very nasty side effects, and many times, I highly considered stop taking them. After a month on the meds, I was taken by my mum to see a Holistic Practitioner and Homeopath.
At the time, I had no clue about what natural medicine was, and to be honest, I doubted she could help me at all. From the moment I left that consult with many dietary and lifestyle changes to be made in my hands, and a few supplements, something inside of me lit it up. It lead me to start digging and doing my own research about my condition and quickly things really started to shift as I put everything into practice! In a matter of two weeks into my new “diet”, I was already feeling much better.
I began introducing certain nutrient dense foods that were related to my condition and nutrition really showed me its power. As I started to feel better, I joined the gym and learned about weight training, which also helped me a lot to recover and it is still a passion of mine until today.
Eventually I managed to get off the medication, finished high school and started studying Nutrition and Dietetics at my home country, Brazil. Three years into my degree I have decided it was time for a little Aussie adventure and I came to Australia with my husband (boyfriend at the time), with the intention to study English for six months and then go back to finish my degree… well, things didn’t quite turn up that way as you can see...! I felt in love with Australia and eventually got back to Uni in here and finished my Bachelor of Science (Nutritional Medicine) at Endeavour College of Natural Health. This was a four year degree that gave me not only personal experience but also an approach to health and wellness that is scientific based, holistic and integrative.
Australia is home now and, as a practitioner, mental health has a very special place in my heart.
I also love dealing with women’s health (specially the hormonal side of things), gut health, digestive health, fatigue, adrenal conditions and sports nutrition.
I do believe in “food as medicine” to treat and prevent diseases as well as optimising health and wellbeing. If you have any questions or want to share your story with me, I am right here to help you!
